TPB registration renewal processing times are stretched

The Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) has announced that it is currently working through an unusually large number of new registration and re-registration applications.

With a backlog of applications to process, the TPB says practitioners may experience some delays in having their renewal applications processed over the next few months. “However you do not need to be concerned,” says TPB Chair Greg Lewis, “as you remain registered so long as you submit your renewal application on time.”

The TPB’s weighted average processing times for various types of registration (for the quarter to June 30, 2017) are summarised in the table below.

The TPB reminds practitioners that avoiding delays in re-registrations or indeed in new registrations can be helped by making sure an application is complete.

Individual applicants need to:

provide complete qualification records, including academic transcripts and course outlines (if required)provide evidence of relevant experiencepay the application feeprovide details of your membership with a recognised professional association (if required).

Company and partnership applicants need to:

pay the application feeprovide details of the registered individuals that form the sufficient number to provide tax agent, BAS or tax (financial) advice services to a competent standard and to carry out supervisory arrangementsprovide personal details of directors and partners who are not registered tax practitioners (if any).

If your application is incomplete, the TPB will generally ask you to provide any missing information or documentation, to which you should respond in a timely manner.

If it does not receive your response within the requested time and you have lodged:

a new application for registration — it may be deemed invalid. The TPB may decide to close an incomplete application and not progress it any further. This means you would have to complete a new application if you still want to register.a renewal application — it may be referred to the board to be considered as is, and any missing information or documentation could affect the decision made by the board.

When your application has been decided, the TPB will email you the outcome to grant or reject your application. If your application is rejected, it will also advise you of the reasons for its decision and your rights of appeal.
